CULTURE NEWS

  • Buddy Holly Hall announced today that Michael V. Hutchison was named Chief Advancement Officer – he will lead fundraising and donor engagement as he brings over 27 years of advancement experience, including his time as Vice President for Advancement at McMurry University.  FOX34
  • This January, Premiere Cinema at South Plains Mall is showing horror films including Primate and 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple and offers a movie ticket with a popcorn, soda, and candy combo (Scary Good Deal) for $13.13.  KFYO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Deal ISD has opened a brand new elementary and middle school today on a redesigned campus for kindergarten through eighth graders. The project, funded by a $48.5-million bond approved in 2021, features a tornado shelter gym, dedicated cafeteria, and a band hall for all students.  FOX34
  • New Deal ISD has opened a new elementary and middle school built with modern security and learning features after a $48.5 million bond passed in 2021. The facility now hosts K-4 on one side and 5-8 on the other and includes a tornado shelter — a first for the district.  KCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews in south Lubbock have begun blocking off the intersection (Highway 87 and 114th Street) today as they resurface roads, and drivers should expect periodic delays through the week.  FOX34
  • The City of Lubbock is now accepting applications for Lubbock 101 Citizens Academy, a program that offers residents eight sessions, department tours & field days with multiple city departments. Applications are due by March 2, the academy starts April 2 and concludes with a graduation ceremony on May 12.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • University Medical Center hosted a blessing ceremony for its third Safe Haven Baby Box at its main campus (east entrance of Medical Office Plaza II) to provide a safe, anonymous option for parents with infants under 60 days, following last week's first surrender in Texas at Fire Station Nine.  KCBD
  • Vitalant is urging Lubbock residents to donate blood during National Blood Donor Month — local hospitals need about 100 pints daily and one donation can help three patients such as newborns and trauma victims; donors must be 16+, weigh 110 pounds, and show photo ID.  KCBD
