COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lubbock resident Floyd Price recalled escorting Jesse Jackson during his 1988 visit when he campaigned for the presidency and praised his unifying message—one that still resonates with the community today. Price, a longtime officer and councilman, said the moment left a lasting impression on him.  KCBD
  • The Texas Tech Club will host its Lucky You Membership Open House later this spring in Lubbock — an event for both members and non-members — featuring live music, light bites and exclusive membership perks; guests can earn VIP status by joining or sponsoring a friend, and advance registration is required.  KCBD
  • Chamber members will enjoy this year's Hub City BBQ Cookoff at Cooks Garage on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23. Tuesday's event features a Ribs & Raiders Dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. that supports High Point Village, and Wednesday hosts a Classic Cook Off in five categories.  KCBD

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple fire departments are on the scene near the community of Seth Ward where a wildfire destroyed several structures; the estimated 600+acre fire is 8% contained as of 4:50 p.m. as the Texas A&M Forest Service assists.  FOX34

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lubbock resident Floyd Price recalled escorting civil rights leader Jesse Jackson during his historic 1988 visit to the city, noting that Jackson's clear message of unity left a lasting impact. Price, who later served as a police officer and councilman, remembered Jackson's natural ability to connect with the crowd.  FOX34
  • Shinedown announced a new album called EI8HT releasing May 29 and will start their Dance Kid Dance Act II World Tour with a Lubbock stop on July 30 at United Supermarkets Arena. North American tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m.  KCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech held a ceremony Tuesday evening at its Student Recreation Center to mark its second Special Olympics Unified banner, making it one of only three universities in Texas to earn the recognition — it also introduced its new ‘Team Texas’ unified basketball team that will compete in Minneapolis this summer.  FOX34

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lubbock Public Health, partnering with Central Plains Center, will host a free Naloxone training session on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Lubbock Public Health Building + residents can learn to reverse opioid overdoses with hands-on instruction.  FOX34
  • Texas data shows 8% of drivers who skip seat belts cause nearly half of fatal crashes and risk fines up to $200. Wearing seat belts cuts death risk by 45% and has reduced crashes since the rule began in 1985 (a strong reason to buckle up).  KFYO

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lent begins today and Lubbock restaurants like Aspen Creek and Bubba's 33 are ready to serve fried fish Fridays throughout the season (40-day period when many choose fish over meat).  KKAM

  • Texas Tech University is home to its second Special Olympics Unified banner and has introduced Team Texas, a unified basketball team of Special Olympics athletes & students, at a ceremony Tuesday at the Student Recreation Center; the team will represent the state at the U.S. Games in Minneapolis this summer.  KCBD
