COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ahavah Foundation—founded by Toni Jennings in 2021—operates four group homes in Lubbock for adults with mental disabilities and now seeks volunteers to help with outings and daily activities. Volunteers must be 17 or older and pass a background check.  KCBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lubbock chefs Jon Walter and Noah Meek have teamed up to bring French-inspired breakfast and pastries to downtown Lubbock. Emerald House Pastry Parlor — located inside Chez Sami at 1219 Crickets Avenue — will open Saturday, March 22 at 7:00 a.m. and serve breakfast and pastries from Tuesday to Saturday.  KKAM

CRIME NEWS

  • SpotCrime lists 17 people missing from Lubbock, with some missing for years and others for decades, and local authorities urge anyone with clues to call (806)775-2865.  KFYO
  • Shaoping Wen (65) and her son Xu Wang (42) were sentenced on March 18th for operating massage parlors used as fronts for commercial sex and money laundering, with Wen ordered to serve prison time and forfeit funds while Xu Wang received time served.  FOX34

  • Comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes returns today to perform her Family Reunion Tour at 7 p.m. at the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences in Lubbock+ she shared details of touring with her new toddler and her journey in stand-up comedy during an interview with James Eppler.  KCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Code Ninjas in Lubbock is helping girls start in STEM by offering coding and tech camps during Women’s History Month, with fourth-grader Violet Gillen building her first video game. The program still has openings for day camps, with Minecraft offered today and stop motion animation tomorrow (director Amy Slaughter noted).  FOX34
  • Ella Vazquez of Calhoun High School was named Athlete and Scholar of the Week by Victory Auto Group. She plays varsity soccer and tennis, leads her school band, and serves on student council and in the National Honor Society while receiving a $50 gift certificate and being entered for a $1250 scholarship (award details).  KKAM
  • The Frenship Chess team qualified for nationals in Orlando set for May 8-11 and is hosting fundraising events—Spirit Nights beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, March 23 at Panda Express, with events at Red Robin on March 31, Parry’s Pizza on April 6, and again on April 24—to help cover travel costs. The team seeks sponsors to pay for travel and room and board, especially for its only female competitor.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas Tech University is investigating a potential measles exposure at the Carpenter-Wells Complex and Student Health Clinic from March 4 to March 12. The university said it will contact those who may have been exposed (including affected dormitory residents) as health officials track the outbreak across the South Plains.  FOX34
