COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fast Eddie's will host the Challenge of Champions on Sunday, Mar. 29 at 3 p.m. at 7301 University Ave #400, where teams compete in games like pool, darts, beer pong and more to support mental health for local service workers — registration closes this Friday.  KFYO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Todd Baughman, director of the Texas A&M AgriLife Center (north of the Lubbock airport), was honored with the Outstanding Educator award by the Southern Weed Science Society. His work in weed control science and research with Texas Tech has boosted local agricultural innovation.  FOX34
  • Lubbock Christian High School seniors donated 1,000 free prom dresses, shoes, and accessories for local girls at the Baker Conference Center until 9 p.m. Monday and will resume today (3-9 p.m.).  FOX34

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Memphis Avenue near Loop 289 is closed today as Lubbock Underground crews repair a water line expected to last until April 3, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to plan ahead + use alternate routes.  KCBD
  • TxDOT advises drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians and cyclists on busy Loop 289 as spring leads more Lubbock residents outdoors — all road users are urged to follow traffic rules and stay alert to reduce preventable crashes.  KKAM
  • Lubbock County commissioners issued a special recognition for National Child Abuse Prevention Month after reviewing data showing 10,000 confirmed child abuse cases over the past decade. The Go Blue Lubbock campaign begins April 1 to teach community members the signs of abuse (a call for vigilance).  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lubbock Fire Lt. Brett Assiter, who served 30 years, had his kidney cancer caught early by the Life Scan program and underwent surgery; he is expected to return to duty soon.  KFYO
  • The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock will receive about $555,000 in state mental health funding from a $5 million grant under the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program, while the El Paso center is set to get a similar amount (supporting education for licensed physicians).  KCBD
