COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Henry Huneke Park, flags fly at Lubbock’s Monument of Courage for Medal of Honor Day—an event that honors about 3,500 service members. On Sunday at 5 p.m., the Friends of the Monument will add Specialist Five Dwight Birdwell to the memorial—he received the medal in 2022 from former President Joe Biden for his heroic actions in Vietnam.  FOX34

CRIME NEWS

  • Leslie Clyde Chew, 28, was arrested in Ward County on March 18 for allegedly shooting a driver on Interstate 27 in April 2024, injuring the driver's left arm—Chew now remains in Lubbock County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond.  KLBK

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Texas officials warned today that warming weather and dust storms are raising fire risks—especially in the northwest where gusts exceed 50 mph. They urged residents to take precautions as conditions could spark fast-spreading fires.  KFYO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lubbock County announced a burn ban in Buffalo Springs, Ransom Canyon, Roosevelt and Slaton because dry weather raised fire risks. The ban took effect on March 24 and lasts 30 days—prohibiting outdoor burning that may spark flames and carrying fines up to $500.  KKAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials say that as schools resume after spring break, measles cases are rising in Texas with 327 cases reported since January, including 10 in Lubbock—40 patients have been hospitalized and one child died. Officials warn that additional cases will likely appear in the coming weeks across 15 affected counties.  Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

  • West Texas home builders broke ground on a mortgage-free home for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Michael Anderson and his family on March 25 in Wolfforth. A $100,000 check from the High Plains Wine & Food Foundation helped cover the building costs.  Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

  • The nation’s top high school basketball recruit Aaliyah Chavez announced her college decision Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.—top programs such as Texas—UCLA—LSU—South Carolina—and Oklahoma had competed for her commitment.  KLBK
