COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local father in Lubbock is struggling to recover after a dust storm on March 14 uprooted an oak tree that damaged his home and his daughter’s car while his truck had only minor damage. His friend started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the cost of replacing the totaled vehicle—he now relies on community support.  FOX34

CRIME NEWS

  • Robert Joseph Baker pleaded guilty to manslaughter for shooting Jason Holloway outside a Market Street parking lot on November 8 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison—he will be eligible to petition for early release after serving up to 180 days.  KLBK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tori Sayre lost her six-year-old daughter Emory when a Brock ISD school bus struck her, and she now urges lawmakers to pass Emory’s Law—a bill that would mandate safety measures such as crossing arm gates, cameras and enhanced driver training—to help prevent future tragedies.  KKAM
  • Lubbock ISD voters have about one month to decide on a $290 million bond package approved for the May ballot that will help consolidate schools, repair infrastructure and improve academics and security while keeping the property tax rate the same. Superintendent Kathy Rollo said the plan was made with input from the community and noted that early voting is from April 22—29 with Election Day on May 3.  FOX34
  • Yesterday, March 27, the City of Lubbock closed Avenue X from 14th to 15th Street for Southwest Contracting to work on the sewer system. The project is set to finish on April 12 — drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time and use alternate routes.  KLBK

  • Flipper's Tavern and Bubba's 33 are preparing for Texas Tech's Sweet 16 game against Arkansas tonight—local business owners set up special offerings—and expect a big crowd from the 806.  KCBD

  • Lubbock ISD named Jose Perez—a Lubbock High graduate and former Estacado High assistant who helped win district and area championships—the new head coach of Lubbock High School boys’ basketball on Thursday afternoon. Perez brings six years of coaching experience and a strong community connection—he is eager to help athletes grow as players and young men.  KLBK
  • Jason Cooper has been named as Frenship Memorial High School’s Girls Athletic Coordinator and Head Girls Basketball Coach. He formerly led Wayland Baptist’s women’s basketball team and will begin meeting with students in early April to help build the school's athletic program before classes open in August.  KCBD
