COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Derek Danner, head of the Child Advocacy Center—an agency charged with protecting children—urged Lubbock residents to report signs of abuse and neglect as the region shows one of the highest rates in the state. Doctor Brian Payne added that the community will soon serve as a beacon for nearby areas—residents are encouraged to wear blue this month—as part of a regional effort to keep children safe.  FOX34

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies from the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office are investigating six overnight burglary calls at southeast Lubbock businesses that occurred on April 2 — they continue gathering leads and urge anyone with information to call the non-emergency line.  KCBD
  • Lubbock financial advisor Joshua Allen faces a new lawsuit accusing him of misleading investors with a promise to expand Walk On’s Bistreaux and Bar after previous Ponzi scheme allegations emerged—trial is set for June 9 in the 72nd District Court.  KCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Tom Segura will perform in Lubbock on November 2 as part of his Segura: Come Together tour—ticket presale began on April 2 at 10:05 a.m. with the code Tommy while general ticket sales start on April 4 at 10:00 a.m.  KKAM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Texas Lottery is changing Mega Millions so players get bigger non-jackpot prizes — the prize range will now be from $10 to $10M with each ticket including a multiplier — and the current game ends Friday while the revamped game starts Saturday with its first drawing on Tuesday. The ticket price will be $5 with the multiplier included, up from $2 plus a $1 add-on, and these changes aim to generate more funds for public education.  KKAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Tech Robotics Fair will be held Saturday, April 5th at the Science Spectrum and OMNI Theater from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—the event is hosted by the Texas Tech Robotics Association and will feature hands-on robotics demos for families and students. A film screening at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.—tickets cost $5 while fair entry is free.  KKAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, County Commissioner’s Court, City Council and the South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention gathered yesterday morning to launch the 12th annual Go Blue Lubbock County Campaign during National Child Abuse Prevention month. The county reported more than 783 confirmed child abuse cases each year over the past decade and marked the campaign’s start with a ribbon cutting.  KLBK
  • A Lubbock County grand jury indicted two people in connection with a fatal shooting near 21st and Ave. S, including a 19-year-old woman implicated in a February death. Texas lawmakers are considering changes to education spending bills to cap education savings account funding and support students with disabilities and low-income families—while the Texas House passed wildfire legislation to strengthen emergency communications.  KCBD

  • Today, the 82nd Annual ABC Pro Rodeo begins at the Mallet Event Center in Levelland with events such as Steer Wrestling, Barrel Racing, Bull Riding, and Mutton Bustin’ — sanctioned by the PRCA. The rodeo will run through April 5 with themed nights and rodeo dances on Friday and Saturday — drawing families to experience Texas heritage.  KFYO
