COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A multi-agency rescue mission saved an injured Air Force colonel from a mountain in Iran over the weekend, based on years of training and contingency planning, military experts said. Lubbock Air Force veteran Chuck Colbert (with 25 years of pararescue experience) highlighted the importance of preparation in such operations.  FOX34
  • Angela Brink converted her trailer into a mobile bookstore called Meet Me In The Stacks and will travel across Lubbock parking lots to offer residents a wide range of books that sparked her lifelong love for reading.  FOX34

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech’s College of Engineering advanced 12 spots to number 105 while the School of Law ranked 85 in the U.S. News and World Report rankings for best graduate programs. Dean Mark Sheridan said the improvements show growing quality in the programs and their impact on innovation in the community.  KCBD
  • A job fair for educators (open to special education, K-12, STEM, and coaching applicants) is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Region 17 Center off the West Loop near Frankford where school district representatives will meet job seekers.  KCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders will hold a public meeting on the Arnett Benson neighborhood plan on Thursday, Apr. 9 at Maggie Trejo Supercenter. The meeting follows a session last week where residents raised concerns about vacant housing, speed bumps and safety.  FOX34

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lubbock residents are warned that aloe vera, common on windowsills, can poison dogs by causing vomiting, diarrhea, tremors and changes in urine color (the plant’s toxic sap is to blame). Pet owners should keep these plants out of reach and contact a vet if symptoms occur.  KKAM
  • Covenant is raising a new flag today to honor organ donors as part of Donate Life Month and has partnered with LifeGift to boost awareness of donation's impact. More than 107,000 people await transplants nationwide, with 10,000 in Texas.  FOX34
