COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vitalant announced Monday that two large blood drives in Lubbock canceled, leaving the hospitals about 100 units short. The South Plains Mall drive is held today from 1 to 7 p.m. and another will run from 1 to 7 p.m. on April 10 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (7016 Frankford Ave.), with donors receiving a movie ticket and popcorn.  KLBK

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to a house fire near Quincy and 37th Street on April 8, rescuing a dog from the garage and working to put out the flames—firefighters battled the blaze as the scene was secured.  FOX34
  • On April 8th just before 9:30 a.m., Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire near Quincy—37th Street, arriving to find smoke from the garage and rescuing a dog as crews continued to work to extinguish the blaze.  KCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Recruits at the Lubbock Police Academy are two months into a rigorous training program that blends tough classroom courses, strenuous workouts and at-home study routines—one recruit said his change from UPS has given him new purpose—and now 13 members remain after the class started with 16 in February. They will soon begin training on arrest procedures.  FOX34
  • Recruits at the Lubbock Police Academy are two months into an intense training program at the Reese Center while balancing rigorous classes and workouts with home pressures; family support proves essential in keeping them focused. Class 2025 Alpha began with 16 recruits and now has 13 determined candidates learning that success at the academy starts at home — each working toward a future in law enforcement.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas health officials reported 505 measles cases in 10 counties since January, with 57 hospitalizations and the death of a school-aged child last Thursday at a Lubbock hospital. The outbreak remains active with new cases in counties such as Gaines and Terry, and officials continue to monitor the situation closely.  Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
  • The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 505 measles cases and 57 hospitalizations as of Tuesday, April 8, including 36 cases in Lubbock with about seven children testing positive at a local daycare, and two unvaccinated children died from the disease. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited Gaines County as CDC teams were deployed and Lubbock Public Health updated vaccine guidelines to allow an early MMR dose for infants aged six to 11 months.  KLBK
