  • The Texas Veterans Commission hosted a mixer for women veterans (often overlooked) at the South Plains Association of Governments building on Friday. It offered benefit resources and a chance to share experiences for better local support.  FOX34
  • Catholic Charities of Lubbock hosted a child abuse awareness event this morning at Guadalupe Early Learning Center + Storybook Farms provided a petting zoo for children to learn about the importance of safe adults.  FOX34

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bubbly Co. in Lubbock will close on Friday, Apr. 24 after serving the community for over a year and is offering a 20% discount on beer and spirits until its final day (its rewards program has already ended).  KKAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lubbock locals have built a supporting environment for musicians and artists who perform at small venues on weekends, and neighbors come together by helping local businesses while enjoying short commutes and a laid-back pace (despite the heat and dust challenges).  KFYO
  • Throughout April, Silent Wings Museum shares World War II glider pilot stories in poetry at its Lubbock exhibit. The museum also hosts a student writing contest with the winner announced Friday as the exhibit runs until the end of the month.  FOX34

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Texas are rising as some cities charge over $4 per gallon, with Lubbock offering the cheapest gas at $3.31 and El Paso above $4. AAA Texas notes crude oil price shifts are driving the trend, so drivers may need to adjust their habits.  KKAM
  • Texas filled a historic 14,379,500 jobs in January while Lubbock maintained a stable 3.7% unemployment rate. The state added 112,200 jobs from last January with 11,800 new construction roles boosting the figures.  KKAM
