- ➤ Open Door is holding its 4th Annual Fun Run to End Homelessness today at 9 a.m. at 1918 13th Street to raise awareness for poverty, homelessness and sex trafficking in Lubbock—a post-run breakfast will follow. KLBK
- ➤ A Lubbock mom named Stephanie Johnson will host the Raising Awareness Motorcycle Ride on April 26 to honor her son Nickolas (who died in 2023) and remind drivers to watch for motorcyclists as the ride begins at TacMed at 5633 Villa Drive with a stop at 19th and Frankford, food trucks, a live DJ, and a raffle. Participants may join by donating $10 or 10 new Hot Wheels and help continue a drive that has already collected 2,500 cars for kids in hospitals. FOX34
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ 38-year-old Antoine Manahan pleaded guilty to the shooting death of Chad Reed in Lubbock on July 11th, 2023 and was sentenced to 35 years in prison—he must serve half his sentence before he is eligible for parole. FOX34
- ➤ A jury sentenced Joshua Walker to 80 years in prison for shooting 68-year-old Alberto Garza, Sr. in December 2021—Walker pleaded guilty and must serve half his sentence before he is eligible for parole. KCBD
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Collective Art Studios opened this month on Avenue J to offer dance classes in hip hop, ballet, tap and jazz along with a free Saturday fitness class—founded by local resident Stephen Sanders to ensure that no child is turned away. The studio now serves kids ages 2 through high school with 25 spots available. KCBD
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 541 measles cases on April 11th—an increase of 36 since the Tuesday update, with Lubbock County showing 38 cases and two unvaccinated school-age children dying. Health officials say the MMR vaccine remains the best protection against measles. KLBK
