- ➤ Kyler Valdez, a senior with Troop 575, donated 65 care packages to Women’s Protective Services in Lubbock to help abuse survivors regain confidence—each package included socks, toothpaste and deodorant. His Eagle Scout project was supported by community efforts, and he will enroll in EMT training after graduation next month. FOX34
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A suspected murder-suicide occurred Tuesday night in the 7000 block of County Road 6100 when 62-year-old Teresa Buritica De Mayon and 69-year-old Joel Mayon were found dead from gunshot wounds, and deputies secured the area while investigators ruled out other suspects+ the investigation remains ongoing. - ➤ Texas Tech will launch the Tech Thrive program this fall to boost student wellness with a new mental health class and a well-being app as part of a five-year quality enhancement plan. The plan will use student data to monitor progress on reducing loneliness and anxiety and provide regular updates on the program website. The Daily Toreader
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lubbock health officials and local doctors warned yesterday that measles can lead to serious long-term complications — including a rare brain disorder — and stressed the need to boost the current 92% vaccination rate to 95% for herd immunity. They added that the Texas outbreak began in January, has infected 561 people, and resulted in three unvaccinated deaths, with young children and infants especially at risk. FOX34
