  • A Lubbock McDonald's crew helped a frantic parent by calling 911 and caring for their child who began seizing in the car—local residents are now praising the staff as true angels.  KFYO
  • Lubbock neurosurgery physician assistant Sixtus Atabong was named the recipient of the second Diekemper Service Above Self Award at the Rotary Club of Lubbock’s annual luncheon at the South Plains Food Bank today. Atabong — founder and president of Purpose Medical Mission — leads a nonprofit that has conducted over 30 medical missions and donated more than $5M in supplies while the club raised a record $50,000 to support the local food bank.  FOX34
  • Jasmine is a 1-year-old pit mix found as a stray in Lubbock who is gentle, quiet, and enjoys car rides on which she often naps—she is spayed, up-to-date on shots, microchipped, has had flea and tick treatment, and comes with a waived adoption fee at Lubbock Animal Services.  FOX34

CULTURE NEWS

  • Broadway musical CHICAGO will perform at The Buddy Holly Hall from May 16—18 as part of the Broadway at the Buddy Holly Hall Series, with shows on May 16 at 7:30 p.m., May 17 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m., and May 18 at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now — group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more.  KFYO
  • Lubbock may claim a world record for tortilla throwing by hosting a halftime contest next football season aimed at beating the record of a 119-foot toss set in Minnesota. The new event—based on a cherished Texas Tech tradition—gives local fans a chance to put our city on the map.  KKAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frenship Memorial High School will open in August for freshmen and sophomores at 7004 43rd Dr. The new 580,000-square-foot school building (with 140 classrooms, gyms, science labs, and culinary spaces) is over 85% done and will add a grade each year while serving about 1,100 students in its first year (its first class will graduate in 2028).  FOX34

  • Lubbock Police Department announced the death of Officer John Barber on April 23 after he served more than 18 years on the Mounted Patrol Unit and continued working despite a cancer diagnosis (he was also known for his leather work with Texas Tech’s Masked Rider).  KCBD
  • Lubbock city council approved buying the Godeke Library building for $3.2 million—located near 50th and Frankford—after the city signed a three-year lease and tasked the city manager with finding a permanent home for its second most visited library branch.  FOX34
