COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Voice of Hope (a local nonprofit) is hosting its 17th annual sexual violence awareness walk called Step into Hope today at Safety City in Clapp Park (registration opens at 12 p.m. and the walk begins at 1 p.m.) to support survivors with resources. The event was renamed from Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to drop the red high heel symbol and make it more inclusive.  KCBD
  • CASA of the South Plains has launched its 20th annual fundraising event Casas for CASA, which runs until May 30. Community members can buy raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes including a custom-built playhouse, storage building, enclosed trailer, or a $3,500 MasterCard gift card as the nonprofit aims to raise $85,000 to support its volunteer programs.  KCBD
  • Petty Officer Phyllis Wyss, a Slaton High graduate, is stationed at FACSFAC VACAPES where she works as an electronics technician managing equipment for air traffic and missile tests on the East Coast. She joined the Navy to honor her grandfather’s legacy (linking her West Texas roots to high-tech service) and represents the community with pride.  KKAM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lifted Trucks hosted its grand opening today at 4222 Woodrow Rd. in Lubbock and made donations to the Lubbock Police Department and Fire Department as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations. The event runs from noon until 2 p.m. and will feature live music, food from Mijos Tex Mex BBQ, and giveaways — inviting families to join the festivities.  KCBD

CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock police arrested 31-year-old Sandy Bonilla-Munos on Wednesday after she abandoned her children following a high-speed crash and left one child at a grocery store—she now faces a $102,500 bond on charges including ICE detainer, child endangerment, and criminal mischief.  KLBK

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bishop Robert Coerver of Lubbock recalled his personal meetings with Pope Francis and shared thoughts on the Pope’s legacy of mercy and unity. The diocese will hold a memorial Mass today at Christ the King Cathedral at 2 p.m.—while the funeral is set in Rome at 10 a.m.  Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

  • Texas Tech’s Tweissters weather team warns Lubbock residents to stay alert as severe weather risks remain high despite a shift in tornado alley—team members use Ka-band Mobile Doppler Radar trucks to track storms and advise residents to use safe shelter practices when warnings are issued.  The Daily Toreader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock began an 8-inch waterline installation at Martin Luther King Boulevard and 24th Street on Thursday and will finish work in about three weeks. Rinks Lease Services, Inc. is repaving asphalt and boring underground—drivers must follow detours—as the project boosts water flow in local neighborhoods.  KLBK
