COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Army Air Force Sergeant RL Tyler, who died as a prisoner of war in the Philippines over 80 years ago, was laid to rest with his family in O’Donnell on Saturday—his remains were identified after exhumation from the Manila American Cemetery.  KCBD
  • Army Air Force Sergeant RL Tyler, a World War II soldier who died as a prisoner of war in the Philippines over 80 years ago—was laid to rest with his family in O’Donnell on Saturday. He died July 19th and his remains were confirmed in a 2018 exhumation—underscoring his long-remembered service.  FOX34
  • Prosperity Bank and the Lubbock Rotary Club will honor five first responders at the Unsung Heroes Award Ceremony on Thursday — an event recognizing their service to Lubbock. The ceremony will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Prosperity Bank Conference Center near 16th St. and Ave. Q.  KCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Buddy Holly Center will host Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail on May 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 1801 Crickets Avenue, featuring the In Silico exhibition by Sean W Scully & collaborators, free admission, and refreshments, with the exhibition running through May 18 and a closing reception from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  KLBK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This summer, kids in Lubbock can join camps that teach science, sports and music. Camp Invention runs at Lubbock-Cooper Central Elementary from June 2 to 6 plus at Frenship ISD’s North Ridge Elementary from June 9 to 13, Breakthrough Basketball Camp is held at Premiere sportsplex from July 9 to 11, Nike Softball Camp takes place at LCU from June 16 to 19, and various Texas Tech camps offer more options.  KLBK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock announced that Lone Star Dirt and Paving, Inc. closed 66th Street from Upland Avenue to Marsha Sharp Freeway on Monday, April 28 for a 60-day period to pave the road and build a low water crossing needed for drainage at the Upland Avenue intersection (detours have been posted to guide alternate routes). Citizens are advised to drive with caution or avoid the area.  KLBK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas Tech announced a $1.3 billion plan to renovate United Supermarkets Arena and change college basketball. The arena will feature a 360° scoreboard, augmented reality displays, a retractable roof, and a new training center — changes designed to boost game day excitement — as the project moves forward.  KKAM
