COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chad Hasty, a longtime talk show host on KFYO for over 20 years, died peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning (he was 43). KFYO will air a tribute edition later today to honor his service to local listeners.  KCBD
  • Faithful Journey Home Care partners with nonprofit Dave’s Wish to host a fundraiser that will help hospice families meet bills such as groceries and rent; flyers inform donors to trigger flamingo visits (a local community game of tag) during the event.  KCBD
  • The South Plains Young Marines will hold a car wash fundraiser on May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion (tickets $5) to support their June encampment at Copper Breaks State Park.  KLBK
  • At Haven Animal Care Shelter, traumatized pets are given recovery care before adoption + a two-week foster period and interviews help match them with new families. Founder Brenda Wilbanks said the program supports pets with physical injuries and emotional trauma as they adjust.  FOX34
  • The Missing Moms Luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at LCU Baker Conference Center (5601 19th Street) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will feature speaker Rachel Wojo offering prayers and hope to women who have experienced loss.  FOX34

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jimenez Y Friends is hosting a barbecue popup event this weekend at Good Line Beer Company — 2611 Boston Avenue — at noon until they sell out. The event features smoked meats and a new Mexican lager brewed with corn tortillas to mark a pre-Cinco de Mayo celebration.  KKAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • This week, health inspectors found and corrected sanitation issues at three local restaurants in Lubbock, with Vizio’s African Bar & Restaurant, District 1 King Claw & Lounge and Rise N Shine Donuts having food temperature and cross-contamination problems. Most violations were fixed during the inspections.  FOX34

  • Texas Tech Athletics said it is surprised by an NCAA inquiry into quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s past gambling activity & noted that no betting alerts have been received since his arrival. The investigation may influence the team as it prepares for upcoming games.  KCBD
