COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lubbock Public Health invites families and individuals to a block party and health fair on Saturday, May 30 at the Dollar Tree parking lot (1807 Parkway Drive) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring food trucks, games, music and local vendors.  KLBK
  • Lubbock has released a full schedule of library events running from May 4 to May 9 at Mahon, Patterson, Groves, and Godeke libraries, where residents can join trivia nights, STEAM sessions, art projects, storytimes, and tutoring programs tailored for all ages.  KLBK
  • 11-year-old Kaylee Hernandez will join Lemonade Day today from 1 to 4 p.m. at Lash and Brow Studio off 65th St. and University Ave to raise funds for her father's headstone after he passed away in June 2024.  KCBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Crunch Fitness filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to move from its Slide Rd location to South Plains Mall; the privately funded move — costing $1.2 million for a 40,000 sqft space — will start on June 1 and finish on New Year’s Eve.  FOX34
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods will open a new store at South Plains Mall in Lubbock in 2028. The Dick’s House of Sport will feature a two-story building and an outdoor track and field area (details from a recent filing).  FOX34

  • The City of Lubbock Solid Waste Department’s Keep Lubbock Beautiful Program announced winners and honorary mentions in its art contest for K–12 students. Six entries earning $100 or $75 prizes will be honored at 10 a.m. today at East Lubbock Art House (405 M.L.K. Jr. Blvd, Suite B).  FOX34

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Texas jumped by 25 cents in one week as Lubbock drivers now pay $3.60 per gallon — AAA Texas said rising crude oil costs amid a closed Strait of Hormuz drove the surge.  KKAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech University recognized 10 graduating seniors on Thursday for excellence in academics, leadership, service, and integrity. The event honored students from various colleges who completed a rigorous application process.  KLBK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas Tech researchers received a $1.75 million TxDOT grant that will fund a four-year study installing LiDAR devices at crosswalks in Lubbock and nearby counties. The devices will give real-time flashing warnings to help drivers slow for pedestrians.  KKAM
