COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock Solid Waste Department + Texas Tech University will host the Move Out Give Back event on May 7 and May 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at two drop-off sites in Lubbock to let residents dispose of furniture and small appliances to help stop illegal dumping and boost reuse.  KCBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • East Lubbock Art House in Lubbock received a Cultural Sustainability grant from Mid-America Arts Alliance—funded by The Wallace Foundation—that will help the creative space expand its art programs and support local artists. It is the only local organization to win the award, which promises more stability and growth for its community efforts.  FOX34

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Rep Carl Tepper is accepting applications from House District 84 students for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program, which offers an annual conditional scholarship to those joining ROTC at state colleges. Eligible students must submit a resume + cover letter detailing their motivation by 5 PM on August 1 and later complete additional steps for nomination.  FOX34
  • Voters approved a $58.5 million bond package for Roosevelt ISD to build a new elementary school + auditorium and renovate the middle school to replace outdated facilities and handle growing enrollment. The package will raise property taxes by 2 cents per hundred dollars valuation and will benefit from contributions by a new factory and planned upgrades to sewer septic systems.  FOX34
  • Lubbock voters approved Proposition A, a $290 million bond proposal that will improve school safety, build three new elementary schools through the consolidation of six, and expand Career and Technical Education programs. Superintendent Kathy Rollo said the district will start campus renovations soon while new school construction will take two and a half years to three years after the bonds are sold — marking a new chapter for students and families.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lubbock Police are investigating the dead body found near Ervin Elementary last Thursday morning while Lubbock ISD provides mental health support to those affected. Dr. Sarah Wakefield of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center said help is available for those facing isolation and hopelessness—she urged calling 988 for immediate crisis resources.  KLBK
  • National Nurse Appreciation Week runs from May 5th to May 9th in Lubbock, and many local restaurants and businesses offer deals + specials to honor nurses. Offers include 20% off at Buffalo Wild Wings, free coffee at Dunkin’ on May 6th, and free burrito e-cards from Chipotle.  KLBK
