- ➤ Larry Aguallo, a former Lubbock High student, recalled how his family took shelter during the devastating 1970 tornado and felt the darkness and sudden loss of power. - ➤ Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV on May 8, making him the first American pope to lead over 1.4 billion Catholics—Bishop Robert Coerver in Lubbock said he was surprised by the election and sees the new pope's global experience as a sign he will work for social justice. The bishop urged local faithful to give Pope Leo XIV grace while he plans to meet with fellow bishops at the Vatican in the coming months. Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ In April, the Texas Schools website released TEA ratings for the school year from 2022 to 2023 for Lubbock districts - Lubbock ISD got a C overall rating of 79, while Lubbock-Cooper ISD and Frenship ISD earned B ratings with scores of 89 and 82, and the ratings measured student achievement, progress and gap closing. The data shows how each district performed based on student tests, graduation rates and progress over time. KLBK
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On April 22, the Department of Justice canceled three federal grants for CASA, cutting its funding from about $500,000 to $75,000 (a significant funding drop) and prompting Kappa Alpha Theta to advise its chapters to support local CASA in Lubbock (the local program serves multiple counties amid high rates of child neglect). The national headquarters said the move aims to strengthen community-level impact as federal priorities shift. The Daily Toreader
- ➤ Little Elm and Lubbock became the first Texas communities to earn all four Friendly Texas Certified Community designations in film, music, tourism, and digital media—marking a grand slam achievement that local leaders and Governor Abbott say will boost economic growth. Officials noted the milestone shows strong local support for creative industries and business growth in the region. KCBD
- ➤ Barricades Unlimited closed the left lane for northbound traffic on Indiana Ave north of 34th Street on May 8 for water line repairs led by Grady Crawford. The work is expected to finish on May 16 if weather permits, and the City advises motorists to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time. KCBD
