- ➤ South Plains College culinary arts student Shiretta Williams hosted Celebrating and Remembering Heavenly Mothers at SPC’s Lubbock Career and Technical Center by baking 66 free mini cakes for the first 66 guests to honor her late mother who would have turned 66 this year — the event gave others who lost their mothers a chance to share memories and find comfort together. - ➤ Today at 2:00 p.m., two Texas Historical Markers will be dedicated at the Tornado Memorial at Lubbock National Bank Park—honoring the 55th anniversary of the first F5 tornado that killed 26 people and led to the development of the Fujita Scale. FOX34
- ➤ In 1970, after an F-5 tornado hit Lubbock, Pearl Brewery sent hundreds of cases of bottled water in beer bottles from San Antonio to help the injured and relief workers. - ➤ Today at 2:00 p.m., the Lubbock County Historical Commission will dedicate two Texas Historical Markers at the Tornado Memorial—located at the northeast corner of Glenna Goodacre and Avenue Q—that honor the 55th anniversary of the F5 tornado that struck Lubbock in May 1970 and took 26 lives. - ➤ The Lubbock Expo Center project cost has risen from $50 million to an estimated $90–$120 million due to pandemic delays and design changes, sparking political disagreements about its future location.
