CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Lubbock youth advisor James Nathan Grassie was found guilty on three counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child after three victims testified that the abuse began on a camping trip and involved exposure to pornography and inappropriate touching, and he now faces up to life in prison. - ➤ Texas Tech has released a series of nostalgic videos—featuring campus photos from the 1950s to the 1980s—that show key moments and landmarks on campus. The videos let students and alumni reconnect with the school’s rich history. KKAM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Texas Department of Public Safety is ramping up statewide patrols from May 12 through May 26 to enforce seatbelt laws and safe driving ahead of Memorial Day. Texas Highway Patrol said the effort is part of Operation CARE — Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort to help reduce crashes and save lives. FOX34
- ➤ On Sunday, the Lubbock County Historical Commission unveiled two Texas Historical Markers at the Tornado Memorial downtown to mark the 55th anniversary of the Lubbock tornado—recognizing the storm and the development of the Fujita Scale. Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer and County Judge Curtis Parrish attended the ceremony with the Tornado Memorial Committee chairs. KCBD
- ➤ Texas DPS is teaming up with patrol agencies (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma) to enforce the Move Over, Slow Down law on Wednesday, May 14 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Troopers aim to improve roadside safety, and drivers who break the law may face fines (up to $1,250 for a first offense or more if an injury occurs). - ➤ Valerie Malone, a Lubbock personal injury attorney, said House Bill 4806, pending in committee, would force injured Texans to meet strict jury rules that may leave them with lower compensation. Business groups and injured parties testified last week before the Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence, and lawmakers have not yet decided the bill's future. FOX34
