COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A Lubbock local is planning a one-day tour for his overseas friend that covers favorite restaurants and fun spots before a state road trip — he invites residents to email their suggestions for more must-see places. KKAM
- ➤ Today, the Lubbock Auto Auction Charity Foundation is awarding donations to Hospice of Lubbock, UMC Cancer Celebrate Day, the Slaton Weekend Snack Sack program, Minis and Friends, and the LISD scholarship fund—efforts that will help these groups serve the South Plains. Founded seven years ago, the nonprofit has donated over $75,000 to local organizations so far. KCBD
- ➤ Lubbock will open splash pads on Friday (May 16) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Sunday (May 18). The pads will run on condensed hours from Monday (May 19) to Thursday (May 22) and return to full summer hours on Friday (May 23) and through Memorial Day weekend at Mae Simmons Park, Maxey Park, and Rogers. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Overton Elementary held a farewell ceremony where students, staff, and alumni celebrated its 76 years of learning. The school will close its doors at the end of the semester and students will attend Rush Elementary next. KCBD
- ➤ South Plains College will host its annual Scholarship Scramble on June 16 at the Rawls Course in Lubbock with a 7 a.m. check-in and an 8 a.m. tee time plus the event will support student scholarships through the SPC Founder’s Opportunity Scholarship Endowment. Hosted by City Bank, teams must register by June 4 to secure one of the 32 spots and will enjoy a light breakfast followed by an awards luncheon at 1 p.m. FOX34
- ➤ Texas lawmakers approved a bill to replace the STAAR test with three shorter tests over the school year—reducing pressure on students. The bill still needs one more House vote before it heads to the Senate and will take effect next school year. KKAM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Texas law does not require drivers to pull over for funeral processions; however, the procession holds the right-of-way at intersections (drivers must respect this) and Lubbock DPS warned all motorists to be careful on the road. KLBK
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Kimber Powell, a 4-year-old diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in October, needs a diabetic service dog that her family says could save her life. The Powells have started a fundraiser to cover the 20,000 to 30,000 dollar cost so Kimber can be more independent and safe. FOX34
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Audrey Hanes, a senior varsity cheerleader at St. Joseph High School, was named athlete and scholar of the week and received a $50 gift card plus a chance at a $1,250 scholarship from Victory Auto Group—she plans to study Nutrition and Allied Health at Blinn before transferring to A&M after graduation.
