CRIME NEWS

  • About 20 protesters gathered Wednesday at the Lubbock County Courthouse — they demanded transparency over the shooting of 20 year old Tech student Erskin Jenkins, who was fatally shot by a deputy during a hostage situation at an early Thanksgiving celebration as his family awaits further answers.  Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lubbock hotels and restaurants are getting ready for a busy graduation weekend as Texas Tech and local colleges hold events and expect about 25,000 to 30,000 visitors. The NCAA Softball Tournament will add more visitors—local businesses and hotels are teaming up to help teams, ESPN, and guests from nearby areas.  FOX34

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hodges Elementary School—a 72-year community landmark—is hosting a grand finale on Saturday from 12 to 2 p.m. before it closes along with two other Lubbock ISD schools at the end of the semester; the event will offer food, fun, free backpacks for registration and a chance to help locate two buried time capsules to preserve its legacy.  FOX34
  • All Saints Episcopal School in Lubbock honored its Class of 2025 by naming Luke Rushing as valedictorian and Emily White as salutatorian; Rushing will attend Texas A&M University as a Brown Scholar + White will pursue Biology at Texas Christian University this fall.  KKAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, two McHur Care Offices open their doors at the YWCA in Lubbock to offer mental health and wellness services focused on children—services range from counseling to intensive care and include a celebration with free pizza, cotton candy, snow cones, and a petting zoo.  FOX34
  • Emergency responders in Lubbock urge families to practice drowning prevention as hotter days bring more visitors to pools and lakes, noting that at least 15 children have drowned in Texas this year (ages 11 months to 16 years). UMC EMS training chief Chad Curry and a mother who nearly lost her child recommend keeping children within arm's reach, using properly fitted life jackets, and learning CPR.  KCBD

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wake the Canyon 2025 will begin tomorrow at Buffalo Springs Lake—offering wakeboard competitions, live music, and local food vendors to fans of all ages. The event is part of the Texas Wake & Surf Series and will feature Free Ride Friday on May 16 followed by skill-level competitions on May 17 and May 18.  KKAM
