COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Frenship ISD and Aramark will offer free lunches for children 18 or younger at two feeding sites in Lubbock and Wolfforth from June 2 until July 25—with meals served Monday through Friday and no service from June 30 to July 4. KCBD
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Adam Villareal, 22, pleaded guilty to shooting two people in a drive-by near Ave. P and 28th St. in September 2021—killing one and injuring the other—and he will serve two concurrent 15-year prison terms with credit for time served. KCBD
- ➤ Lubbock Police remind residents to lock doors, windows, and vehicles as warm weather brings a rise in burglaries and thefts; they advise checking who is at the door and asking a trusted neighbor to watch over their home (if leaving town). KFYO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ After nearly eight decades of serving central Lubbock students, the O.L. Slaton middle school is closing due to district consolidations and will hold a closing ceremony today at 5 p.m. (near 34th St. and Ave. Q) as former students, teachers, and staff honor its legacy while students move on to new schools, with eighth graders heading to Monterey High and others to Dunbar College Academy (or Atkins Middle School). - ➤ Kaystn Gonzalez became the first in her family to graduate from Texas Tech on Friday — she earned a bachelor's in psychology with a minor in Gender Studies while balancing three jobs — and eased her family's financial worries. She will start graduate school in the fall — planning to major in couple marriage and family counseling, human development and family sciences, and educational psychology — to build her counseling career. - ➤ Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo celebrated its first-ever graduating class when 61 students received their doctorates on Sunday. Local dignitaries, including Governor Greg Abbott, attended the historic ceremony as officials stressed the need for more veterinarians in rural areas. KCBD

- ➤ Texas Tech now runs the Reese Technology Center after lawmakers passed a house bill sponsored by Carl Tepper and Charles Perry. The center will add national security work and build a locked area for top secret research—working with the Pentagon, Homeland Security and the Department of Energy while it waits for federal funds. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Homeowners in west Texas should test their tap water at least once a year if they see signs like a bad taste or cloudy water — EPA guidelines list these and other indicators, such as poor soap lather and equipment stains, as warnings of potential contaminants. Lubbock water remains safe as its 79 fluoridated systems are routinely maintained to protect public health. KKAM

- ➤ Bryson Vandiver, a nine-year-old Lubbock boy, is living his dream by competing in rodeos and practicing events like barrels and goat tying—he won the all-around cowboy title at the No Limits Jr. Rodeo finals last month.
