COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lubbock Meals on Wheels and TXU Energy teamed up on May 21 to distribute over 550 box fans—funded by a $10,000 donation—to help clients beat the summer heat.  FOX34
  • Lubbock Animal Services rescued 16 dogs and one cat from severe neglect near 42nd and Utica — all found without food or water — and is asking local residents to foster them while the agency covers their medical care until a hearing decides their future.  KKAM
  • Lubbock Fire Rescue, Public Works, and Animal Services rescued a dog from a sewer drain at the Amazon Fulfillment Facility on East Hunter Street around 11:15 a.m.—the dog will be held for three days before adoption.  KLBK
  • Tenants at a South Lubbock mobile home park said they endured nearly two weeks without electricity after their landlord failed to pay the bill, forcing some to repair leaks and handle water shut-offs on their own. A TCEQ investigator visited on May 14—residents say they still face ongoing maintenance issues amid an active probe.  KCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lubbock ISD will offer free breakfast and lunch for children 18 and younger from May 27 through July 31 at several school locations — no registration is needed. Frenship ISD, partnering with Aramark, will host the annual Tiger Bites program with free on-site lunches and family activities from June 2 through July 25.  Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
  • Starting May 27, Lubbock ISD will partner with the South Plains Food Bank and Lubbock National Bank to offer free summer meals for all children 18 and under across Lubbock — six ISD campuses will serve meals and nine additional Grab and Go sites, while all locations close from June 30 to July 3.  KCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the State House unanimously advanced a package of bills that raises the homestead exemption—$140,000 for standard homeowners and an extra $60,000 for those over 65—to reduce school district property taxes. The proposal needs one more vote before it goes to the governor and appears on the November ballot.  FOX34
