- ➤ Lubbock YWCA Sun ‘n Fun and Reliant Energy are hosting the Safety Around Water Kick-Off event today at 11:00 a.m. at Sun ‘n Fun on 6204 Elgin Avenue—this program, funded by a $20,000 Reliant Energy donation, will offer free or low-cost swim lessons and water safety education for 300 children ahead of the summer season. - ➤ A single car crash on S Highway 83 and County Road 217 on Saturday afternoon left Bobby Trevino, aged 49, dead and sent passenger Misty Nichole Jones with serious injuries to UMC Lubbock — officials are investigating the incident. KLBK

CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Best Foot Spa (7412 South University) in Lubbock closed when the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation issued a six-month emergency closure on May 19 after its probe uncovered violations such as employees living on-site, missing client consultation documents, and illicit advertisements offering sexual services among eight establishments statewide. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lubbock teen Anika Freeman, who grew up in foster care, graduated from Lubbock High School today — she relied on the support of the Salvation Army Passage Program — and plans to attend South Plains College to study nursing. Freeman works part-time and credits her dog — Beauty — for keeping her motivated through hard times. KCBD
- ➤ Kim Mills-Oller (a math teacher with 37 years of experience at All Saints High School) was named this month’s 'One Class at a Time' recipient and will receive a $500 grant from Frontier Dodge and Spirit Chrysler; she said her students are still the highlight of her day. She chose the matching $500 grant for the South Plains Food Bank (which can provide 1,500 meals) to support families in need. FOX34

- ➤ Lubbock Fire Rescue opened a new $9.2 million fire station at 142nd St. and Indiana named for late firefighter Eric Hill, who was fatally injured in a 2020 crash. Hill's family and the fire chief say the station will keep his memory alive and remind firefighters of his service every day. FOX34
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Texas Tech softball is preparing to compete in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. Their record improved from 29 to 21 last year to 50 wins so far and the team’s success is building local interest in fast pitch softball — spurring more community support. KCBD
