COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grocery Services North opened its new WIC store today at 606 W. Loop 289 Ste. 200 near Steak Express to help young families shop quickly—Store president Mark Brumback said the store cuts shopping time from up to 45 minutes to around eight minutes.  KCBD

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house on East 2nd Street caught fire this morning and Lubbock firefighters joined crews from Idalou, New Deal, Buffalo Springs, and Roosevelt to contain the blaze by 10:58 a.m. today with no injuries reported (the cause is under investigation).  KKAM
  • The state fire marshal’s office ruled the manhole fires and explosion on Texas Tech campus accidental — water on an underground electrical line caused faults that led to a smoke explosion, and Lubbock Power and Light has repaired the system while reviewing the report.  FOX34
  • This morning, Lubbock County firefighters and crews from Idalou, New Deal, Buffalo Springs, and Roosevelt quickly battled a house fire on the 4100 block of East 2nd Street—no injuries were reported and the blaze was under control by 10:58 a.m.  KFYO

CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock Police Department warned citizens on social media about a new scam using spoofed numbers—gift cards and pressure tactics—and advised them to verify caller IDs by calling official numbers directly.  KLBK
  • At about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, Lubbock Sheriff’s deputies arrested 21-year-old True Bruington, who was charged with DWI and carrying a weapon after his car rolled over in a ditch (at North CR 3000 and Highway 62/82) in northeast Lubbock County and suffered minor injuries (with fire departments helping free him) before being booked at the county detention center.  KCBD

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Covenant Medical Center and Covenant Children’s in Lubbock earned national recognition for environmental sustainability after receiving the Emerald Award and Circles of Excellence distinctions from Practice Greenhealth. The awards honor efforts such as using 100-percent renewable electricity, LED retrofits and improved waste management to save money and reduce emissions.  FOX34

HEALTH NEWS

  • Covenant Medical Center and Covenant Children’s Hospitals earned national recognition for environmental sustainability by receiving the Emerald Award+ and being named Circles of Excellence exemplars for Climate Impact Reduction, while Covenant Medical Center also was honored for Energy Efficiency. Their initiatives using renewable energy and LED retrofits have saved money and reduced carbon emissions in Lubbock+.  KCBD
