COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A 3-year-old Lubbock boy put on his firefighter outfit and sprayed water on a dumpster fire in his alley on Sunday — his dad reported smoke and firefighters confirmed the area was safe.  FOX34
  • A south Lubbock homeowner died in a fire after an improperly discarded cigarette ignited the home near 70th and Ave. P. The Texas Tech Softball team begins play in the Women’s College World Series today at 6 p.m. in Oklahoma City—while the fire marshal concluded its March investigation into manhole fires at Texas Tech caused by an electrical line submerged in water.  KCBD

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An elderly person and three dogs died when a house fire broke out on 70th Street on Wednesday in Lubbock due to an improperly discarded cigarette — rescuers found that the fire had spread undetected before arriving.  KLBK

  • Dunkin' in Lubbock launched its Pink Spritz Refresher yesterday—a fizzy mix of guava, orange and passion fruit with sparkling water. The limited-time drink is priced at $3 for a medium and is available to help locals cool off this summer.  KFYO

CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock Police continue to investigate the unsolved murder of Texas Tech pre-med student Stefanie Hill, who was killed by blunt force trauma after a fire broke out at the Indiana Village apartments on Memorial Day 2000, + detectives say they have not identified a suspect, + fresh witness statements offer new leads to bring justice for her family.  KLBK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Literacy Lubbock and Literacy Texas teamed up with local educators to learn new strategies for teaching youth as officials point to a national report that over 54% of U.S. adults read below a sixth-grade level. Officials stress that boosting literacy is key to breaking cycles of low skills—helping families and the community build a stronger future.  KCBD
  • Saundra Wimberly, a teacher at Crestview Elementary for 24 years, made a special quilt each year with help from her students and gave one away to a chosen student through a parent auction. Her quilt-making tradition taught her students about the art and meaning of personal history—keeping memories alive through every stitch.  KLBK
  • Lubbock-Cooper ISD now offers Adulting 101 in the fall and Adulting 102 in the spring to teach skills like banking, budgeting, nutrition and taxes—classes led by Kim Vann that use video assignments and community partners to help students handle real-life challenges.  KLBK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock and Lubbock ISD will hold a full-scale emergency exercise at Atkins Middle School on June 3 to simulate an active shooter incident — only authorized personnel will be allowed on campus and temporary road closures will be in effect.  FOX34
