- ➤ In 1951, four Texas Tech professors in Lubbock said they saw 15 to 30 bluish-green lights flying in formation that they said moved too quickly to be birds; an outside expert suggested the lights might have been birds, but the professors disagree — the case remains a quiet mystery that locals still discuss. - ➤ Reuters reported that the Permian oil boom is fading due to more electric cars in China and drying wells—fewer oil jobs in Midland-Odessa may mean a small pinch for Lubbock, though the change will happen slowly. - ➤ The National Weather Service survey team confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes in Dawson County on May 29 as a supercell moved across the South Plains. The first tornado touched down near Punkin Center and tracked 6.82 miles before lifting northwest of Lamesa while the second formed near Tenmile at 6:46 p.m. and moved 4.36 miles toward Sparenberg — no injuries were reported. - ➤ Residents in Lubbock can drop off waste at Caliche Canyon Landfill on North Ave P open weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at West Texas Region Disposal Facility in Abernathy open weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 7 a.m. to noon—each site charges fees based on weight and requires a valid driver’s license. Accepted materials include non-hazardous waste, wood, and special waste needing approval, while loads without proper straps incur a $15 fee—customers must also pay a deposit based on load size. KKAM
- ➤ Jody Guerra was sworn in as the new sheriff in Cochran County on Saturday morning, replacing interim sheriff Scott Prothro after former sheriff Jorge de la Cruz died in November. Guerra is a Levelland native with nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience (he ran for sheriff in Hockley County last year) and took over the role. FOX34
