  • Lubbock families are driving 37 minutes to Brownfield's Aquatic Center to cool off with water slides, a lazy river, and lap lanes. The center limits capacity to 325 swimmers—arriving early is recommended to secure a spot.  KKAM
  • Jerry Ramirez, director of Food2Kids at First Baptist Church, stepped in when Mission, Lubbock closed its doors and now his nonprofit sends snack bags to children in four school districts to help them between school meals. Residents can join Nexstar's Founders Day today at 7403 S. University Avenue (9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) to donate cash or branded food items that cost $4.00 per snack bag.  KLBK

  • Yesterday, the Buddy Holly Center’s Summer Showcase Concert Series featured local band Mariachi Mi Tierra in the Meadows Courtyard from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The series runs every Thursday from May 15 — August 14 and offers free concerts along with access to Buddy Holly exhibits.  KCBD
  • Lubbock’s Juneteenth Committee hosted the Rise Up Weekend kickoff event at Patterson Branch Library on Thursday to celebrate Black emancipation and community heritage—this three-day celebration continues tonight with a Glow in the Dark dance party for kids and Saturday features a Senior Breakfast, parade, festival, and firework show.  The Daily Toreader

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA Texas reported that the statewide price for regular unleaded fuel is $2.82 per gallon, a rise of seven cents from last week, with drivers in Lubbock paying $2.66 per gallon (the lowest statewide). Crude oil prices increased $9 per barrel over the past week, and rising tensions overseas may push fuel costs higher.  KCBD

  • Texas Tech announced in a press release late Thursday that the Texas Tech Alumni Association will transition to become part of the university. The move will streamline operations—improve stewardship and transparency while keeping programs like scholarship support and alumni events.  KLBK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Texas officials intercepted a dangerous fungus from China that can make people sick and harm crops + state authorities quickly contained it and urged producers to call the Texas Department of Agriculture if crops show signs of infection such as bleached grains or dark stems.  KKAM
  • Lubbock Public Health confirmed that mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus, prompting local vector control teams to boost spraying as part of the annual mosquito surveillance program. Residents are urged to use EPA-registered repellents and wear long sleeves to protect against bites — these steps help prevent the virus from spreading.  KCBD
