COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Texas Roadhouse (6101 Slide Road) in Lubbock will host a fundraiser Wednesday, July 9 from 3 to 10 p.m. for Kerr County flood relief; 10 percent of food purchases will be donated to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country (as announced on social media).  KLBK

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 5, a 17-year-old opened fire at a large gathering in East Lubbock and was fatally shot by police after ignoring commands—five others were injured in the incident.  KKAM
  • Police are investigating an overnight shooting near 22nd and Buddy Holly Ave after a bar fight led to gunfire at 2:30 a.m., leaving multiple individuals moderately injured with one man taken to UMC and others treated at Covenant Medical Center.  KCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech has acquired a new phenotype machine that monitors plants in real time to record their physical traits and help breed crops with survival traits in extreme environments. The university is the third in the nation to use the machine at the Institute of Genomics for Crop Antibiotic Stress Tolerance — researchers will soon move it into the field to test its performance.  KLBK

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • KCBD meteorologist Cary Allen is saddened by Kerr Co. flooding that killed over 100 people and left dozens missing—he saw cars and belongings stranded near Camp Mystic as water rushed down steep canyons. Allen, who grew up in Kerr County and lost longtime friends, urges financial donations to support the relief efforts—he calls on the community to help rebuild lives.  KCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today after executive session, Lubbock City Council will hold a public hearing in Citizens Tower on land use assumptions & capital improvements plan and the proposed roadway impact fees. A second hearing on July 22 after executive session will consider the adoption of these fees & allow public evidence.  FOX34
  • Lubbock city leaders stopped hiring new workers and delayed projects to address a $5 million gap in the general fund — caused by lower-than-expected sales tax revenue. Essential services like police and fire remain fully staffed — and officials will watch sales tax reports to plan next year’s budget.  KLBK
  • Today, the Lubbock City Council is holding a public hearing on land use assumptions, the capital improvements plan, and a proposed impact fee at the City Council Chambers in Citizens Tower—allowing any member of the public to present evidence. A second hearing to adopt roadway impact fees will take place on July 22 immediately after executive session.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Lubbock coffee shop is hosting a fundraiser at 7 Brew on Milwaukee Avenue — it will support the Garrison Institute on Aging at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center on July 9 from 5:30 a.m. to close by donating $1 from each large drink purchased in honor of customer David Thulin, who lived with Alzheimer’s.  KLBK
