COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 100 Black Men of West Texas will host the Charles and Rose Hankson Fishing Derby on July 19 at Mae Simmons Lake—1701 Canyon Lake Drive—from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event offers free food, prizes and fishing contests to honor a 29-year local tradition and supports donations of fishing gear.  KLBK
  • Pre-registration is open for the 16th annual Vamos a Pescar, Let’s go Fishing event hosted by Los Hermanos Familia on Aug. 9 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can fish at Buddy Holly Lake without a license and will receive a free lunch—adults must be present.  FOX34
  • Since 1967, Friends of the Library in Lubbock has supported local libraries by holding book sales that channel every dollar raised back to library programs and resources. The next sale will be held July 25 and 26 at the Mahon Library basement from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Friday is for members while Saturday welcomes everyone.  KLBK

  • Turner Heffington, a 22-year-old Texas Tech student, farms cotton fields from Muleshoe to Anton and works nearly 100 hours a week during planting and harvesting seasons. He is a third-generation cotton farmer who continues his family legacy despite low market prices—he studies Ag Economics and plans to graduate in Fall 2025.  KLBK

  • Families in Lubbock will visit the free Back-2-School Bash at Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as children must be present to receive backpacks and school supplies — local groups will share resources — to help prepare for the new school year.  KLBK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction on the intersection of 146th Street & Frankford Avenue will close the area for about 30 days starting Monday as Utility Contractors of America, Inc. begins work on a new sanitary sewer main; drivers are advised to steer clear of the neighborhood.  KLBK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yesterday, July 15, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported 762 confirmed measles cases in West Texas — Lubbock County had 53, Gaines County had 414, and Lamar County sees ongoing transmission. The total increased by nine since the July 8 update.  KLBK
