ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ LSO responded Thursday morning to a call at a home near Frankford and 130th Street where a disturbed beehive caused a large bee swarm that stung four people—one of whom was taken to hospital for an allergic reaction as Lubbock Fire Rescue sprayed water and a local beekeeper was called to assist. - ➤ A large bee infestation in a home on the 5600 block of 130th led LCSO to respond at 9:10 a.m. on Thursday when animal control found four people stung—one woman suffered an allergic reaction and was taken to the hospital as fire rescue sprayed water to control the bees. KLBK
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lubbock Police said an officer who shot 17-year-old Terrence Hastings Jr. on July 5 during a fight on the 2900 block of Parkway Drive—and where five people were injured in unrelated incidents—was cleared by an internal investigation and the District Attorney’s Office and has returned to duty. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students in Lubbock ISD, Lubbock-Cooper ISD, and Frenship ISD will return to school on August 13 while teachers begin professional development before classes resume—school choice provisions will not take effect until next school year—preparing everyone for a busy start. Parents and students have begun their back-to-school preparations as summer quickly comes to an end. KKAM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington has released $16 billion in relief funds to West Texas farmers who suffered crop losses in 2023 and 2024 from severe drought and extreme weather. Stage 1 of the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program began on July 10 at local FSA offices—farmers must maintain crop insurance at a 60% level for the next two years to keep the aid. KFYO
- ➤ TxDOT is ramping up its Be Safe. Drive Smart campaign in Lubbock to remind drivers not to speed after nearly 1,500 lives were lost statewide last year—officers will soon patrol the roads to issue tickets and urge caution. Lanisa Dehn, whose mother died in a speeding crash in 2020, shared her pain and warned that speeding is a choice costing lives. KLBK
- ➤ The City of Lubbock extended the free Movies in the Park series until August 9 as pre-show activities begin at 6:00 p.m. and films will start at 8:30 p.m. with The Wild Robot at Mackenzie Park on July 19, Moana 2 at Aztlan Park on July 26, Despicable Me 4 at Rodgers Park on August 5, and Inside Out 2 at Maxey Park while free popcorn is available by Wellpoint and donations benefit the DePelchin Children’s Center.
