  • Texas Tech Athletics and Ronald McDonald House Charities have hosted the Quarterback S.A.C.K luncheon for the past 25 years to support families with critically ill children by inviting fans to pledge donations for each sack during the football season — all funds will provide critical care to these families.  FOX34
  • On Friday, the ABC Pro Rodeo handed a $50,000 check to the Boys and Girls Club of Lubbock — a donation that doubled last year’s amount and supports local kids — marking the rodeo’s 82nd year of help.  KCBD
  • CASA of the South Plains is launching a campaign to recruit 50 monthly donors to help provide therapy, education, safe housing and advocacy for vulnerable foster children—CEO Jaclyn Morris said even a $10 donation can change a child's life.  KLBK

  • After closing last December, Mano Negra is set to open its new downtown location at 708 13th Street on Friday, August 1 as part of the First Friday Art Trail. Owner Daniel Badillo said the renovated brewery took eight months to finish and will host food trucks, salsa dancing and more on Saturday, August 2 + it will offer a familiar space for patrons + the venue reflects his heritage.  KLBK

CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock man Jonathan Cervantes, 38, was arrested today for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he threatened a man over a cell phone dispute by pulling a concealed firearm and fleeing from officers—police later found methamphetamines and a loaded firearm magazine on him, and he now faces charges including unlawful firearm possession by a felon, tampering with evidence, evading arrest, and possessing methamphetamines with bonds set at $60,000.  KLBK
  • A dozen suspects are in custody after Operation Midnight Sun led to arrests for gang violence and drug offenses in Littlefield—law enforcement agencies including Littlefield PD, the Texas Anti-Gang Center and others executed search warrants on July 17.  KCBD

  • At TTUHSC’s White Coat Ceremony on July 25 in Lubbock, future doctors began their journey in medicine—many following family traditions—with a pledge to serve local communities. Several students said that growing up with relatives in healthcare made the event extra personal as they stepped into their new roles, ready to start their studies.  KCBD

  • Leonardo Santiago-Torres, a 23-year-old from Lubbock, was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure in 2022 and now seeks a living donor because his rare O positive blood type makes matching difficult—this year his health improved with strong support from his wife.
