COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock and Texas Tech will host a free back to school bash on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center — the event will give out 5,000 backpacks and school supplies to students in kindergarten to 12th grade and offer free haircuts along with community resources.  FOX34
  • The city of Lubbock has released the full week of public library events starting July 28 with shows, storytimes, crafts, and a Back-2-School Bash at branches like Mahon, Patterson, Godeke, and Groves. The programs serve all ages (from young children to seniors) and include a summer reading challenge that runs through July 31.  KLBK
  • Dairy Queen in Lubbock will host Miracle Treat Day on July 31 to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals—each Blizzard Treat purchased will donate at least $1 to fund pediatric care.  KLBK

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On the evening of July 28 at approximately 7:54 p.m., emergency crews responded to a fire on East 19th Street in Lubbock and brought it under control—no injuries were reported as the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the cause.  KLBK

  • Taco Villa will open a new store at 3428 Milwaukee Avenue on July 31st with a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. — the event will offer free milkshake samples, a debut of BBQ Chicken Nachos and a chance to win VIP tickets to Rock the Hill.  FOX34
  • The Spins—named after a Mac Miller track that sparked owner Evelyn Mendez’s inspiration—will open during Lubbock's First Friday Art Trail in August at 1947 19th Street, offering soulful coffees, homemade syrups, fresh tamales, and community events in a cozy space lined with vinyl records and art.  KLBK

  • Officers responded to a shots fired call near Baylor and North University in north Lubbock early Monday—one person was taken to UMC and later died with no details yet on the cause.  KCBD
