- ➤ On July 29th, the government cut SNAP funds by 20%—about $186 billion lost—which is expected to push more Lubbock residents to seek help at the South Plains Food Bank. Dina Jeffries, the food bank’s CEO, said the organization was not hit directly—plans are in place to assist the growing number of clients. KLBK

- ➤ Early Tuesday, a driver struck several cows on NFM 179; first responders and the Texas Department of Transportation cleared debris+no human injuries were reported. KFYO
- ➤ A truck crashed into a commercial building in Lubbock Monday evening around 6:20 p.m.—Lubbock Fire Rescue stabilized the damaged structure, no injuries were reported, and police are investigating the cause. KFYO
- ➤ A vehicle fire near 103rd and Upland Avenue injured one person who was hospitalized after the fire occurred at about 12:35 a.m.—Lubbock Fire Rescue and police are investigating the cause. KCBD

CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lubbock Police responded to a robbery call at 11:35 p.m. on Monday at the 5600 block of 48th Street and found a victim seriously injured after being assaulted by two unknown suspects—EMS transported the victim to University Medical Center. KLBK
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The South Plains Genealogical Society will start a free year-long Beginner Genealogy Class at Mahon Library Community Room on Monday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m., inviting local residents to learn about building family trees and finding online records. The class will meet every third Monday of the month and offer hands-on guidance to help participants uncover their ancestry (no experience needed). KLBK
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission approved $121 million in funding and began construction of the new Lubbock Psychiatric Center near Peach Avenue to be completed in 2027. The 108,430 square foot, 50-bed facility will follow modern mental health standards and enhanced safety measures (perimeter fencing, video surveillance, alarms, electronic monitors, and additional staff) to serve the local community. - ➤ Governor Abbott announced today that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission began building the new Lubbock Psychiatric Center with $121 million in state funds. The 50-bed, 108,430-square-foot hospital will be built off Peach Avenue+near Highway 84 and is set to be finished in 2027. FOX34
