- ➤ Lubbock Special Victims Unit is investigating former Lubbock High teacher Jeremy Maxfield for charges including sexual assault and an improper educator-student relationship from incidents in late 2019—Maxfield is held on bonds of $150,000 with the U.S. Marshals and $50,000 with the Lubbock County Sheriff. - ➤ Jury selection is underway for Adam Canales Jr.—charged with manslaughter after his wife and he gave a two‐month‐old baby medication not meant for infants—which autopsy notes say caused her death; the trial will resume today at 9 a.m. FOX34

- ➤ Noemi Garcia began her first semester at Texas Tech on Monday—after a hard few months in which she lost her mother and missed her graduation from South Plains College. Supported by scholarships and a caring community, she said her studies honor her mother even as she still feels the loss. FOX34
- ➤ Texas Tech recorded its highest incoming undergraduate enrollment when more than 10,000 students enrolled, including over 7,600 first-time college students, as classes began on August 25—breaking the previous record from 2023. Preliminary graduation rates improved with the four-year rate rising above 53% and the six-year rate exceeding 69%. KCBD

- ➤ Today, Texas Tech and the FBI signed a Cooperative Research & Development Agreement in Lubbock to develop cybersecurity solutions that will protect critical systems such as the electric grid and communications networks—showing West Texas taking a lead role in national defense. - ➤ Data from the Texas Comptroller's Office shows that Lubbock County's 2024 property tax rate ranked 194th out of 254 counties and its average homestead appraisal was $223,528. The numbers show that not all counties can be directly compared because property values differ. KCBD
- ➤ Lubbock County Commissioners approved a deal allowing Tesla to move its title processing services to Lubbock — a change expected to bring millions in tax revenue and create 10 new jobs for processing about 50,000 titles annually.
