COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Matthew White, a Lubbock Eagle Scout, was honored Thursday at the South Plains Council’s Friends of Scouting luncheon for saving his mother’s life during a November heart attack by performing CPR—his scouting training prepared him to act quickly.  KCBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Crumbs Sourdough Snacks opened a new storefront at 4321 Woodrow Rd, Suite #9 in Lubbock — the bakery serves sourdough loaves, brioche twists, sweet breads, and cookies while still appearing at the Wolfforth Farmers Market every Saturday. The business will soon offer breakfast and lunch panini sandwiches.  KKAM
  • Villa’s Tortillas in Lubbock is making special gameday tortillas ahead of Texas Tech’s football season opener this Saturday, with owners Juan and Daniela Villa inspired by a 2023 game when a tortilla hit Juan and planning to serve their signature stamped tortillas and her recipe beans for fans throughout the season.  KCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lubbock-area Congressman Jodey Arrington—and Texas Sen. Brandon Creighton—are in the running to become Texas Tech chancellor, and the Board of Regents will meet Saturday at 11:15 a.m. in Lubbock to update the search process.  FOX34
  • The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously for a historic 13% pay raise for certified teachers, boosting starting salaries to $50,900 and taking effect this school year with increases showing up on September paychecks.  FOX34

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lubbock ISD trustees approved a new tax rate of 86 cents per hundred dollars at a Thursday morning meeting, which is nearly 4 cents lower than last year's rate. The trustees said the district’s budget deficit and aging schools will force consolidation to keep staff pay in line with the cost of living.  KCBD
  • The Lubbock Police Department said its community policing model has improved response times and strengthened local ties since opening three substations in fall 2021—officers now engage with residents daily and use the stations for meetings and breaks.  KCBD

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lubbock hunters are set to start dove season Monday, Sept. 1 as record dove numbers and ample food sources promise a busy season & hunters are reminded to follow safe fire zone rules. Texas Parks & Wildlife expects strong action into October as many plan multiple outings.  KKAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Citibus has announced that the Park n Ride Gameday Express will provide $6 roundtrip service for Texas Tech Football fans traveling to and from Jones AT&T Stadium starting three hours before kickoff and ending 15 minutes after kickoff, with passes available each Monday in the GoPass app. The service offers convenient pick-up locations at TTUHSC—ADA Lot, North TTUHSC Lot, United Supermarkets Arena Red Lot and TTUHSC Satellite Lot to help avoid traffic and parking issues.  FOX34
