CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock police are seeking 23-year-old Kendrick 'Skrilla' Taylor who is accused of shooting 18-year-old Lawrence Brantley on the 1900 block of 41st Street on August 18 and is considered armed and dangerous—contact authorities if spotted.  KKAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Texas Tech has long used two mascots—Raider Red and the Masked Rider—with Raider Red evolving from a cartoon character into a campus icon when a rule banned live mascots, a move that made both symbols vital for game days.  KFYO
  • This fall, West Texas sees a new dessert that mixes pecan pie and tamales—using masa with a filling of butter, pecans, and sweet spices to create an unusual treat that has sparked local curiosity. Locals are watching as this twist on tradition may soon become a seasonal favorite.  KKAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech University announced that Texas country band Flatland Cavalry will headline its free Homecoming Concert on Oct. 10—parade starts at 6 p.m. and a pep rally is set for 7:30 p.m.—as the school invites alumni, students and faculty to join the celebration.  FOX34

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Lubbock marked the completion of the 146th Street project and the 98th Street project with ribbon cutting ceremonies attended by Mayor Mark McBrayer. The 98th project now runs from Alcove to Upland Ave while the 146th project extends west of 146th and Quaker.  FOX34
  • On Sept. 4, about 40 protestors and 15 counterprotestors gathered outside Rep. Dustin Burrows' donor event at the Texas Tech Frazier Alumni Pavilion to protest Texas legislators—protestors shouted and counterprotestors held signs in support of officials— as part of their exercise of First Amendment rights.  The Daily Toreader
