COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation is seeking sponsors, display hosts, and volunteers for the 17th annual Pumpkin Trail, expected to attract over 20,000 visitors. The event will run from October 16 to October 19 at the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum—local groups and businesses are invited to take part.  KCBD
  • On Tuesday evening, Parry’s Pizza Taphouse hosted a fundraiser where 20% of the proceeds were set aside for the Big Hat Club Fundraiser to support Lubbock Monterey AMBUCS. Diners who visited in person or for carryout were asked to mention AMBUCS to their server.  FOX34

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lubbock Municipal Garden — Arts Center invites the community to its 55th Annual Fall Festival on September 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 4215 University Avenue, where local art, craft vendors, food trucks, and live performances will take place.  FOX34

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Atmos Energy announced that it is donating $1.5 million to nonprofits across eight states to help families settle unpaid utility bills before winter. The funds will aid vulnerable customers, including the elderly + those with disabilities, in keeping their natural gas service active as cold weather approaches.  KCBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McCool Academy, which opened in 2020, gives sixth through eighth graders project-based learning—where they learn by doing and build skills in thinking, talking, and teamwork. Principal Carolyn Wadley said the school uses hands-on projects to strengthen bonds between teachers and students so any student who works hard can succeed.  FOX34

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lubbock County Commissioners approved a new UMC budget that sets a tax rate of .09 cents per $100 valuation to help pay for indigent care—money earmarked solely for those without insurance and not for hospital operations or EMS.  FOX34
  • Lubbock City Council approved the upcoming fiscal year's budget and tax rate Tuesday after a tense half hour debate—raising the average single-family homeowner’s tax to $1,060.55 with a rate of 47.2191 cents per $100 valuation. The approved budget also funds public safety raises and transfers from the street maintenance fund while members discussed additional cuts.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas Tech professor Jeff Hanson — known for his engaging teaching and strong community ties — has over 50 donors signed up to help save his life as his kidney health declined, with 23 potential donors cleared for the next phase and the transplant scheduled over Christmas break so he can return to teaching in the spring.  FOX34
  • Lubbock Impact will host a grand opening next Thursday for its new Foundations of Healing Medical Clinic that offers free care for uninsured adults aged 19 through 64. The clinic will start with Tuesday morning appointments from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.—staffed by volunteer professionals.  KCBD
