COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department is seeking volunteers from student groups, clubs, and classes to help with the 17th Annual Pumpkin Trail from October 16–19 at the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum—an event that attracts over 20,000 people each year.   • A Lubbock mom is hosting the free 'It Takes a Village' Conference and Resource Fair on Sept 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Aldersgate Church on south Indiana to help families connect with more than 40 resource booths, five speakers and free childcare for those who register.  KCBD

  • Volkano BBQ Sushi is set to open Monday, September 15 in Lubbock at 6219 Slide Rd—just across from Crunch Fitness—and will serve all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and sushi with a variety of grilled meats and fresh rolls.  KKAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech shattered its fundraising record by raising $236 million from 37,845 donors in FY2025 through the ON&ON Campaign. The money was allocated to 139 new scholarships and student aid funds, over $61 million for more scholarships, 129 endowments, three faculty positions and over $43 million for community programs.  KFYO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders plan to revitalize the Depot District with improved safety and lighting upgrades starting January 2026. Officials will work on one street at a time along 16th to 19th St — local engineers are studying options and residents will be invited to give feedback.  KCBD
  • The Lubbock County Office of Emergency Management is urging local families to prepare for disasters like tornadoes, floods—power outages by planning emergency kits and training to help keep everyone safe during National Preparedness Month.  KFYO
  • The City of Lubbock is asking residents to share ideas for a redesigned website by completing an online survey by October 1 — the survey will guide changes to make city services easier to access.  KFYO
  • At Tuesday's meeting, the Lubbock City Council voted to raise taxes even though Mayor McBrayer tried to lower the budget. The measure passed by a 5-2 vote (adding $15 to the average homeowner’s bill).  KFYO
  • The City of Lubbock is planning to revitalize the Depot District along 16th to 19th Streets with safety and lighting improvements — including better pedestrian lighting, rideshare parking areas, signage and safer sidewalks — as part of its Downtown Master Plan, with work set to begin as early as January 2026.  FOX34
  • Texas will enforce stricter rules today to keep Delta Eight and Delta Ten products from children after Gov. Abbott issued an executive order this afternoon. Multiple state agencies will require age checks, testing, and labeling—Lubbock State Senator Perry, however, says these measures do not go far enough and advocates a complete ban.  FOX34

  • Brian Jimenez, an Army veteran and tattoo artist at Hold Fast Tattoo Parlour, hosted a free ;IGY6 tattoo event in Lubbock to honor World Suicide Prevention Day by offering 22 tattoos symbolizing the daily average of veterans lost to suicide—veterans and community members showed their support with the meaningful ink.  FOX34
