EDUCATION NEWS

  • A parent said her 11-year-old child with a learning disability and seizures was left locked in a dark classroom on Tuesday afternoon at Dunbar College Preparatory Academy, and the school district removed the employee while working with the family to resolve the situation—her daughter is now being transferred to another school.  KCBD
  • Texas Tech University celebrated a milestone on September 11 when it enrolled 42,272 first-year students — the largest first-year class in school history that saw record graduation rates. The surge brought the undergraduate total to 33,996 and marked the fourth straight fall of enrollment gains.  KLBK
  • On Tuesday afternoon, an 11-year-old student with a learning disability was left alone in a dark classroom at Dunbar College Preparatory Academy and later found by a teacher when her parent arrived at 5:15 p.m. Lubbock ISD said the employee involved is no longer with the district and the student is being transferred to another school—officials are working with the family to resolve the situation.  FOX34

  • New Texas restaurant laws went into effect on September 1 to ease regulations and cut costs for 57,000 foodservice establishments and their 1.4 million employees. The changes offer simplified permitting, permit fee relief (limiting extra charges by local health departments) and uniform food manager standards.  KLBK
  • Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish was appointed to the state elections panel to review Senate Bill 2753— a law that would change early voting to two full weekends and might cost counties millions. The 11-member committee will study the law’s impact on vote counting and budgets before changes take effect in FY 2027— a review that could affect rural areas too.  KCBD

  • A Lubbock mother credited a late night Google search with saving her 7-year-old son's life when he faced life-threatening complications from a cavernoma — after a risky four-hour surgery in Houston, he is now home, starting second grade and returning to baseball.  KCBD
  • Walmart is hosting a Wellness Event in Lubbock today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that offers free health screenings plus immunizations, vision tests and pharmacist advice.  KLBK
  • Doctor Jean Watson (renowned nursing theorist) visited Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center on Friday to share her Unitary Caring Science theory that calls for treating patients with compassion and love (core to her approach).
