ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tree branch from a swing in San Angelo fell and struck 9-year-old Annsleigh, injuring her head and shoulder and sending her to UMC Children’s Hospital in Lubbock where doctors are working to reduce brain swelling.  FOX34
  • The Idalou Fire Department and Atmos Energy are on the scene near 11th St. and Date Ave to assess a damaged sewer line — evacuations are underway as crews investigate the issue.  FOX34

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 108th annual South Plains Fair opens today and runs through the 27th, charging $102 for ages 13 and up with free entry for lunch before 1 p.m. on weekdays and enforcing a 12x6x12 clear bag policy—Tuesday's Buck-A-Ride Night featured $1 rides and limited food vendors.  KKAM
  • The Flatland Film Festival is underway at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts in Lubbock, showing four feature films and more than 30 short films by Texas filmmakers — it will end Saturday with a screening of Matter of Time by Levelland native Jeremy Snead.  FOX34

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech University has changed its campus rules because of Senate Bill 2972—also called the Campus Protection Act—that sets limits on student protests and other expressive activities. The new law stops events from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.—limits noise and bans masks and tents—and forces student groups to schedule events carefully to avoid breaking the rules.  KKAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today Governor Greg Abbott announced that more than $1.4 million in FVA grants will be awarded to seven veteran service organizations including Lubbock County and Lubbock Regional MHMR Center—this funding will help over 520 veterans and their families with home modifications, financial assistance, clinical counseling and other key services.  FOX34
  • The Texas Department of Transportation is hosting two car seat checkup events next week—Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Covenant Pediatric Helicopter 'Kite Flite' from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 27 at UMC I-27 Medical Center from 10 a.m. to noon—to help parents install the seats correctly.  KCBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lubbock Impact celebrated the grand opening of its Foundations of Healing Medical Clinic in central Lubbock on Thursday morning, where volunteer medical professionals provided no-cost care for uninsured patients ages 19 to 64. The clinic offers Tuesday morning appointments (8:30-11:30 a.m.) and requires patients to call for a callback (34th and Boston Ave).  KCBD
