COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City of Lubbock will host its annual Pumpkin Trail from October 16th to 19th, lighting up the city at night with carved pumpkins from local families (a cherished tradition). Pumpkins can be dropped off on October 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (a free carving contest is set for October 15th at Hodges Community Center with registration required by October 12th).  KFYO
  • Volunteers from High Point Village helped Lubbock Apartment Association members with maintenance projects Thursday, saving funds for vital programming—residents and workers shared warm exchanges during the work. Their joint effort is expected to strengthen community services for the villagers.  KCBD
  • Past participants of the nine-week grief classes at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers will attend a reunion dinner this Saturday, marking the first gathering since 2019. Nearly 100 alumni are expected—new classes will start in January for those seeking support.  FOX34

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lubbock Cultural Arts Foundation will host 'Making It Work: From Grades to Gigs' on October 4th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Texas Tech Student Union Building, Senate Room) to offer workshops and live music performances that help trained musicians transition to professional careers.  FOX34
  • Texas Tech’s museum has officially rebranded as MaTT—offering a wider range of exhibits that include dinosaur skeletons and Native American artifacts to celebrate Lubbock’s rich heritage. The museum remains free and invites visitors to explore its rotating displays on art and history.  KFYO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lubbock High teacher Ed Perkins—who has taught AP World History, AP Macroeconomics and a new AP African American Studies class for 16 years—is honored with the Yale Educator Award after a former student nominated him. He said his teaching style keeps students engaged and he will continue to find new ways to help them learn.  KCBD
  • Lubbock Christian University hosted its 14th annual Lanier Lecture where Dr. John Walton gave an insightful talk on Genesis One in the context of the ancient Near East—he engaged the audience during a dinner Q&A and a subsequent session in the auditorium.  KCBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ceta Canyon Camp is updating its safety measures as new state legislation forces camps to complete decades of deferred improvements by April 1 in the wake of floods that killed 27 girls at Camp Mystic — the camp will seek help from partners to meet costly requirements such as a new outdoor warning system and fiber upgrades. CEO Joe Alarcón said the changes honor the victims and aim to protect campers while ensuring the camp continues its long-standing mission.  KCBD
  • Lubbock pastor Rev. Elliott Powell from Westminster Presbyterian Church served as guest chaplain in the U.S. House on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.—he delivered a heartfelt prayer for unity and civility during political division.
