COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Wolfforth family that runs NXGN Boxing Club lost their home last week in a fire — they are using community donations to rebuild while continuing to coach local kids. The family is moving forward with help from friends and neighbors.  KCBD
  • On October 4, Buffalo Springs Lake will host the C.A.S.T. for Kids fishing event at 8:30 a.m. at the Marina—children with special needs will have their gear provided by volunteer boaters for a 2–3 hour outing and will enjoy a celebratory lunch and awards ceremony.  KFYO

CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock Animal Services (LAS) warned residents about scammers posing as LAS staff to adopt out dogs for a fee much higher than the standard ($30). The agency said residents should ask for an official badge or call 806-775-2057 if they are unsure.  FOX34

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Servennia Wyatt, a 66-year-old Lubbock man, reached 100 hours of reading and writing lessons at Mahon Library with Literacy Lubbock—meeting twice weekly with volunteer tutor Beth Gilliams. Mayor Mark McBrayer honored Wyatt’s progress with a letter recognizing his lifelong learning effort.  FOX34
  • Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton was named Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System by the Board of Regents on Tuesday, September 30 — while former Chancellor Dr. Tedd Mitchell will start an advisory role on November 19 to support the transition.  KFYO
  • Texas Tech’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department received a $2-million STEM grant from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships, hands-on training, and industry mentorship for students entering the semiconductor workforce — the grant will also support local partnerships with X-Fab in Lubbock.  KCBD
  • Victory Auto Group is honoring a hardworking student each week with a $100 gift card—parents, teachers and coaches can nominate by submitting the student's name, school and reason. The award recognizes excellence in academics or athletics—nominations are now open.  KKAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lubbock officials warn residents that rabies cases are rising among wild animals—especially bats—and they urge pet owners to keep pets vaccinated and avoid contact with wildlife. Officials say anyone bitten or scratched should wash the area with warm soapy water and seek medical care immediately.  KFYO
  • StarCare Specialty Health System honored KCBD Investigative Reporter Shaley Kidwell with the Frank M. Adams Award Tuesday for her series on mental health across the South Plains—she received special recognition at a board meeting since she stayed home with her new daughter.  KCBD
  • The Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter reported that over $100,000 has been raised for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will take place Saturday, October 4 at Adventure Park—walkers will carry colored flowers in a Promise Garden ceremony—to meet a $128,000 goal. The event starts at 9:00 a.m. with an Opening Ceremony at 10:00 a.m.  FOX34
  • After Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Lubbock’s Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and the Children's Oncology Group keep working to improve childhood cancer treatment. Their research has helped kids like Emmie and Paxton beat cancer and now scientists are teaming with experts abroad—raising cure rates and hope for families.  FOX34
