COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Georgia man injured himself rescuing a raccoon in Lubbock (the animal later tested positive for rabies), prompting local officials to urge residents to call animal control instead of handling wild animals on their own.  KFYO
  • Bears Burgers and Dawgs risk closing at the end of December due to a weak economy, but on Monday local patrons lined up at 2201 N 2nd Avenue in Canyon to show support — a clear sign of community spirit.  KKAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lubbock’s Norman M. Shulman is a finalist in the 2025 IAN Book Awards for his book Love, Norm (built on a series of heartfelt letters to his stepson, an Air Force pilot) published by Texas Tech University Press. The work spotlights his blend of history and military heritage.  KKAM
  • Lubbock residents celebrate the festive season with eggnog, college bowl games and creative holiday decor including lasting Christmas lights and an elf on the shelf to help keep kids in check. Festivities continue throughout December.  KKAM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasts show that a white Christmas is unlikely even though parts of the South Plains saw light frost recently. Records indicate that Lubbock last measured snowfall on Christmas in 2011, but weather conditions may change as the holiday nears.  KKAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Maggie Durham, a community advocate and lifelong Texan, announced her campaign for Texas House District 84 today, challenging incumbent Rep. Carl Tepper. She said her campaign will focus on strengthening rural communities and bolstering public education in the South Plains.  KCBD
  • Matt Smith, a rancher and local businessman from Abilene, launched his congressional campaign in Lubbock during the Big 12 Championship ads today. He emphasized faith, family and hard work as he outlined plans to bring a fresh perspective to Congress.  KFYO
