COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Latino Lubbock offers free community updates every Thursday to help locals stay informed about events and news — free copies can be picked up or found online.  KLBK
  • On June 11, officials launched the Beat the Heat program at Patterson Library, and all four Lubbock libraries now serve as cooling centers that offer air conditioning, free water, Wi-Fi, and charging stations when three or more days have a heat index over 104°. The program—also active in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Corpus Christi—gives residents a safe place to beat the summer heat.  KFYO

CRIME NEWS

  • Lubbock police arrested three suspects on Wednesday—Alejandro Montoya, Elijha Elizondo, and one other—after an armed robbery at a McDonald's on S. Loop 289 when officers stopped a fleeing vehicle and recovered stolen items including a rifle.  KKAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country star Zach Top (ACM New Male Artist of the Year) will perform at Cook’s Garage (an outdoor venue) on Friday, September 27th as part of his Cold Beer & Country Music Tour. Tickets go on pre-sale Tuesday, June 24th at 10 a.m. and general sale will start Friday, June 27th at 10 a.m.  KFYO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, RWE announced that it contributed $25,000 in scholarships to the Texas Tech renewable energy program and students in that field. The scholarships will be awarded over five years with $1,000 given each semester to five students (this effort meets the growing need for skilled renewable energy workers).  KLBK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lt. Snodgrass, who has served the LPD for 21 years (south division), graduated from the FBI National Academy on June 5th in Quantico (Virginia); her achievement places her among the less than 1% of officers nationwide who complete the rigorous 10-week program.  FOX34
  • City of Wolfforth has issued a boil water notice due to a watermain break—residents must boil water before use until officials say it is safe, with updates to follow when the notice is lifted.  FOX34
